10 Tips for making “Water” Healthy

When it comes to water, the people think only 6 to 8 glasses of RO water intake per day is sufficient.

Notable here that more than two-thirds of our total body weight is water. It is almost essential for every metabolic activity in our body, like cellular give-and-take exchange, maintaining organs turgidity, plasma blood concentration, and even maintaining temperature, breathing, digestion, circulation, sweating, and excretion and many more. Water is also a necessary part of saliva, digestive juices, hormones, cerebral fluid, spinal fluid, fluids between our joint and nerves.

In the modern era of industrialization and capitalization, drinking water availability is a challenge due to population blast, urban waste contamination, industrial pollution, depleting natural resources, and critical fall in groundwater levels. To check the quality of water, now a method and technology are used globally called TDS. It is Total Dissolved Solids in water, and here SOLIDS means all salts, minerals, heavy metals, and impurities. It is an excellent method to check water quality but generally misunderstood in terms of figures that “lower the TDS of water is better for health” because of many essential micronutrients minerals and salts. So lower TDS is best is a myth.

TDS in between the 200 to 500 mark is best for your health, a very low TDS, below 200 is not acceptable as healthy for prolong use. Almost all brands of packed and so-called mineral water have TDS below the 100 marks. People are getting traped by marketing and sales propaganda of packed water and RO, (reverse osmosis) purifiers. RO water purifiers are suitable to clean impurities from water like lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, etc. but also removes useful minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and bicarbonates. RO water purifiers also decrease the pH value of water, again harmful for health. Long term use of RO water with TDS lower than 100 marks can harm bone mineral density, hormone production, cardiovascular health, neurological impulse, fetus development, kidney functions, and children’s growth.

The low pH level of water can disturb digestion, blood and plasma concentration, and various other metabolic processes.

You only need a RO technology water purifier if your house’s water supply has TDS higher than the 700-800 mark, else you need ultrafiltration (UF) technique purifier with ultraviolet (UV) for microorganism treatment.

Besides quality and quantity, it is also important, how to drink water because drinking water abruptly or in a wrong way can disturb our digestion and metabolism cause obesity, joints, and respiratory problems ultimately cause complications like hypertension, diabetes, liver problem, arthritis, and asthma.

How to drink water

  1.  Always drink water slowly, sip by sip, don’t pour it like one glass in a single time. Give time to your saliva secretions to mix with water. It takes a little bit of time like half-second to secrete and mix with your every sip of water which is good for General Health.
  2. Drink water 40 minutes before or after taking meals, don’t drink water with meals because between meals or just after meals it can cause dilution of your gastric juices and lowers it’s quality and effectiveness to digest food, which can ultimately give indigestion. You can take fresh fruit juice, Curd, Lassi, lemon water, even milk is good with your meals to avoid indigestion by drinking water with meals.
  3. Always drink lukewarm water slowly by taking a sip. It will improve digestion, cure acidity, and prevent various metabolic and chemical disorders like diabetes, gout, arthritis, obesity, cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, snoring, ankle pain, asthma, allergy, and constipation.
  4. Drink clay pot stored water that will improve its mineral content and its health benefits. 
  5. Avoid drinking chilled water directly from the fridge because it can badly affect your health by causing obesity, indigestion, cholesterol, allergies, asthma, various pains, diabetes, and respiratory issues.
  6. It is best if water temperature has 15-20 degrees Celsius difference from your standard body temperature, more difference not good for your health, chilled and hot water beyond this limit both will be harmful to health.
  7. Don’t use chlorinated water for regular drinking use; it causes many digestive issues like liver problems, irritable bowel syndrome, and disturb bacterial flora of your intestine. 
  8. The best practice for water purification is to boil water in the morning and leave it to room temperature, ready to use for the next 24 hours.
  9. If a filter is necessary, then use a simple or ultrafilter, and if using RO filter than set TDS above 200. 
  10. The general Ayurveda and Naturopathy rule for using water in different seasons is
  • In summers from March to June, water stored in clay pots for 6 to 12 hours.
  • From July to October, in the rainy season, use water stored in the copper pot at least for 6 to 12 hours.
  • From November to February, in winters use water stored in a Gold pot for 6 to 12 hours and can use a gold spoon or small stick in a regular pot if you don’t have any gold pot.
